Papaver somniferum are characterised by wide-open flowers, with large petals surrounding a green, urn-shaped capsule. The capsule will enlarge after flowering and makes a decorative cut flower, be it fresh or dried. Most interesting though, is the common name “Opium Poppy”. This is in fact the species from which both opium and poppy seeds are derived.
