Overview:
Create Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems that will improve flood resilience, enhance public spaces and support biodiversity.
Project Details:
In collaboration with Arup and Severn Trent, Pictorial Meadows have been involved with the creation of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) in Mansfield as part of the town’s Sustainable Flood Resilience Project – the largest flood resilience scheme in the UK.
Many towns and cities are at risk of urban flooding due to urbanisation, population increase and the impact of climate change. Urban flooding not only has major social and economic impacts, but also contributes to biodiversity loss. Our team have helped address this issue in Mansfield by installing SuDS such as bioswales in various locations across the town.
Bioswales, which are shallow, plant-filled channels with sloping sides, stop surface water from quickly overwhelming drains by storing large volumes of water and releasing it more slowly into the ground. The bioswales were created using our manufactured SuDS substrate and Purple Haze meadow turf.
The SuDS we’ve installed across Mansfield will not only improve flood resilience in the town, but also enhance public spaces and support biodiversity.
‘Combining functionality with beauty, this project is a true testament to how green infrastructure can create resilient, attractive and ecologically-beneficial urban spaces.’ – Dan Cornwell, Pictorial Meadows Director
